Has anyone in the LDAR community used a leak detection camera that used Infrared sensing. We are looking to use a devise as a preliminary survey to identify leaking components for LDAR testing - any experiences / advice out there?

Whilst I've not used it myself, I do know of someone who tells me that they are trying the Flir Thermography camera ("GasfindIR"), but as with all these optical devices, the background behind the leak may affect how easily you view it. If you get a chance to try one of these cameras out (or any other model), then I would be interested to see how you get on.

You're welcome to email me directly, and we can set up a call to talk about our recent experience with the FLIR camera at our facility. We had the camera in our possession for about a week. I can tell you more about the potential uses, and some of the limitations of the camera. I can also put you in touch with someone from the reasearch/technology part of our company who's worked with a number of other IR cameras and who could help you more.

Do you think that IR cameras will become an alternative method 21? What has suprised you the most during the IR camera testing?

1. Could happen. Look in the Federal Register (71 FR 17405) to see the first draft of the future CFR reg. Note: It's dated April 6, 2006. I'd expect this draft to change a lot over the next few months.
2. Surprises? Probably that (1) the camera is so bad at finding leaks, and that (2) so many people would talk highly of the cameras considering their inability to find leaks. Personally, I think a strong M21 program beats a camera...at least, at this stage in their technological development.

The GasFindIR from FLIR is very good at finding leaks, as long as the operator has some basic knowledge of the plant. I have been using the camera for about 3 years now. I am abel to "see" large leaks all the way down to a slight wisp of hydrocarbons. All plants should have one of these cameras in their plant, or one similar.
